Behind the Art
Battling fibromyalgia, an autoimmune disease characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, sleep disturbances, and cognitive challenges, has profoundly shaped Ariana’s perspective on life and art. The physical and mental toll of the condition often leaves her feeling drained and overwhelmed. In 2018, Ariana was hospitalized after a seizure, which resulted in ongoing tremors that still affect her today. On top of this, she also faces the threat of sleep apnea, a life-threatening condition that causes repeated interruptions in breathing during sleep, leading to dangerous oxygen deprivation. If left untreated, sleep apnea increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, and even sudden cardiac arrest. It also contributes to excessive daytime fatigue, raising the likelihood of accidents and cognitive impairment. For Ariana, managing both fibromyalgia and sleep apnea means dealing with constant exhaustion and physical limitations, making everyday tasks a struggle.
Despite these challenges, Ariana refuses to let her illness define her. Instead, she has found solace in art, using it as a powerful form of healing. The creative process provides her with a sense of safety, offering a space where she can express her emotions, frustrations, and the pain she endures daily. Through abstract mixed media, she channels her experiences, transforming her suffering into something beautiful and meaningful. Art has become more than just a hobby; it’s a therapeutic escape, allowing Ariana to manage her chronic pain while giving her the strength and resilience to navigate the ups and downs of her condition.
The act of creating has helped her not only cope but also develop a deeper sense of empathy, as her journey with this autoimmune disease has made her more attuned to the struggles of others. Ariana is committed to using her art to raise awareness for social causes, connecting with those facing their own challenges. Her journey with fibromyalgia has not only sparked creativity but has also allowed her to produce art that resonates with authenticity, vulnerability, and resilience. Through her work, Ariana continues to prove that even in the face of pain and adversity, there is beauty and strength to be found.

"Creating art lets me express the feelings I have no words for. There's something so freeing and healing about making art out of pain. Pain you aren't always able to see. My illness is invisible, but I am not."

“I will always keep showing up. I will always keep going and keep pushing through. I’m no inspiration. Just someone who wants others to see that art is important and necessary. My diagnosis changed my plans, my dreams, and my life, but art has given me a kind of resilience. Yes, my illness is forever, but beautiful things can come from it. I hope my art hanging in an office or home can bring peace to that space. And if my story resonates or uplifts someone, then I’ve accomplished my goal.”
